Domtar’s Kingsport Mill Wins National Sustainability Award

Domtar’s Kingsport Mill has been nationally recognized for its environmental leadership by the National Recycling Coalition (NRC). The mill received the Fred Schmitt Award for Outstanding Corporate Leadership, highlighting Domtar’s commitment to sustainability through the use of 100% recycled materials in containerboard production.

The recognition celebrates the transformation of the facility into the largest recycled containerboard facility in Tennessee. The mill now produces approximately 600,000 tons of recycled linerboard and corrugated medium annually, while consuming nearly 700,000 tons of recycled paper and corrugated containers — a major contribution to landfill waste reduction.

Additional sustainability initiatives at the Kingsport site include:

– Reusing over 31,500 tons of demolition materials,

– Reducing daily water usage,

– Transitioning to lithium-ion powered industrial vehicles,

– Partnering with Food City on a closed-loop recycling program.

Domtar’s Kingsport Mill conversion project represents one of the most significant environmental upgrades in North America’s forest products sector. The award was officially presented during the NRC’s annual conference in Wichita, Kansas, in October 2025.

Beyond sustainability, the mill drives economic and social impact: creating local jobs, reducing unemployment, and strengthening the regional economy. Its presence fosters innovation and attracts new investments while improving quality of life in the surrounding community.

Through this recognition, the mill reaffirms its position as a model for responsible, forward-looking manufacturing in the paper and packaging industry.
