Jackson Wijaya Supports Domtar Initiative Connecting Designers to the World of Print

With the goal of highlighting the value of paper, Domtar supported the Print Design Summit this March, the world’s largest virtual event dedicated to print and packaging design, an initiative led by Dave Hopkins, founder of the Print Design Academy.

Jackson Wijaya, shareholder of Domtar, underscores the importance of bridging the paper industry with the creative professionals who rely on it. The partnership with Hopkins and the Print Design Summit is a direct reflection of that commitment: bringing knowledge, inspiration and access to designers at every level, anywhere in the world.

A Story That Started Far From the Print Shop

The founder of the Print Design Academy once wanted to be an auto mechanic, inspired by a television show that customized celebrity cars. He went on to study mechanics and custom car audio systems. But in an unexpected twist of fate, a referral from an ex-girlfriend’s father landed him a job at a local print shop.

What started as a side job became an 18-year career in the industry, during which Hopkins identified a troubling gap: design programs were graduating professionals with little to no practical knowledge of print.

Designers were entering the workforce unable to distinguish between coated and uncoated paper, unfamiliar with paper weight or substrate thickness. That realization led him to found the Print Design Academy and, later, the Print Design Summit.

The event, free and entirely virtual, brings together more than 20 speakers over five days, covering packaging, magazines, direct mail, labels and emerging technologies. In 2025, more than 4,000 designers from 144 countries registered. The 2026 edition, held from March 9 to 13, was the largest in the event’s history.
