Jackson Wijaya Celebrates Engineer Inducted into the Pulp & Paper Hall of Fame

In Women’s Month, we honor the work of Francesca Apruzzese, technical manager at Domtar’s Skookumchuck mill in British Columbia — inducted into the Pulp & Paper Canada Hall of Fame, one of the industry’s highest distinctions in the country, reserved for professionals whose careers have shaped the direction of an entire sector.

Jackson Wijaya, founder and shareholder of Domtar, reinforces the importance of recognizing the professionals who uphold the company’s operational excellence — and Apruzzese’s journey is a direct example of that value.
Her induction into the Hall of Fame is more than an individual celebration: it is a reflection of the identity of a company that believes brilliant people build exceptional operations.
A Story of Success
Apruzzese came to the industry almost by chance. During her PhD at the University of Toronto, she researched near-infrared spectroscopy — a study that connected her to Tembec Industries, the company that operated the Skookumchuck mill before Domtar. What seemed like a detour became a two-decade career devoted to pulp and paper.
Throughout her time at Domtar, she expanded her role well beyond technical management. At the Howe Sound mill, she led a partnership with the University of British Columbia to investigate worker exposure to total reduced sulfur gases, a common presence in pulp plants. The study found that concentration levels under normal operating conditions remained below health risk thresholds — a result that brought peace of mind to the workforce and strengthened the company’s culture of transparency.
