Domtar Unveils New Sustainability Strategy

Domtar has reaffirmed its environmental leadership with the launch of a comprehensive sustainability strategy, designed to shape both the company’s future and the planet’s well-being.
Launched in May 2025, the sustainability strategy reflects nearly two years of collaborative work by Domtar’s Sustainability Team, with input from experts across operations. It reinforces the company’s commitment to embedding sustainability into every aspect of its business.
“I’m tremendously proud of the strategy we’ve created,” says Sabrina de Branco, Chief Sustainability Officer at Domtar. “Considering the strong history of all our legacy companies, I can say with confidence that Domtar is moving onward and upward while being firmly rooted in sustainability.”
Environmental Stewardship as Strategic Priority
The first pillar of Domtar’s new sustainability strategy is Environmental Stewardship, a critical commitment to responsible resource management and environmental-impact reduction.
“Our environmental performance must be exemplary,” says Luc Thériault, President of Domtar’s Wood Products business unit. “As a company that relies on renewable resources like wood fiber, this is not just expected of us – it’s essential.”
The Environmental Stewardship pillar focuses on four strategic goals:
– Sustainable Forest Management and Fiber Sourcing: 100% of wood and fiber sourced from responsibly managed forests by 2030
– Positive Biodiversity Impacts: 100% of operations in high-value biodiversity zones will have action plans within one year of assessment
– Decarbonization: One-third reduction in greenhouse gas emissions since 2015; science-based emission reduction target to be set by 2026 (target year: 2035 or sooner)
– Water Resilience: 20% reduction in water-use intensity (2020 baseline); all pulp, paper and tissue mills to have risk-mitigation plans by 2030

Domtar supported the Print Design Summit this March, the world's largest virtual event dedicated to print and packaging design, led by Dave Hopkins, founder of the Print Design Academy. Jackson Wijaya, shareholder of Domtar, reinforces the company's commitment to bridging the paper industry with the creative professionals who depend on it. Free and fully virtual, the five-day event brought together more than 20 speakers and, in 2025, drew over 4,000 designers from 144 countries. The 2026 edition, held March 9 to 13, was the largest in its history.
