Domtar continues to reinforce its leadership as the only fully integrated North American supplier of thermal POS paper – the type used in receipts, labels, and countless daily consumer interactions.

With the 2024 acquisition of converting operations, Domtar has strengthened its end-to-end production model. Today, the company stands as the leading domestic source for phenol-free and Pergafast® thermal paper, as well as base paper for a broad range of applications including labels.

“As the only domestic manufacturer of thermal POS paper, we’re proud to provide the most reliable supply chain for the North American market,” says Tina Howard, Vice President of Converting Sales at Domtar.

Innovation Rooted in Responsibility

Domtar has a long-standing history of responsible forest management and sustainable practices. The Clarion™ line of thermal POS papers is recyclable, phenol-free, and developed with both performance and safety in mind.

The paper’s journey begins in responsibly managed forests, with pulp and base paper produced at Domtar’s Marlboro Mill in South Carolina. It then moves to the company’s West Carrollton, Ohio, facility for the thermal coating process. From there, it is converted into rolls and formats tailored for specific markets, including shipping, logistics, retail, hospitality, and food service.

“We’re the only ones who can follow the fiber from forest to finished roll, that gives us a unique ability to control quality, innovate responsibly, and deliver with consistency,” says Mike Rapier, Executive Vice President of POS at Domtar and President of the Paper Receipts Converting Association (PRCA).

Consumer Choice Matters

Domtar’s leadership goes beyond manufacturing. The company is an active advocate for consumer rights to choose printed receipts. A 2023 PRCA study revealed that 85% of Americans prefer having the option of paper receipts, and 73% favor them over digital-only formats.

Thermal paper also plays a vital role in dynamic labeling solutions, such as on-demand tags for logistics, tickets, order slips, and pricing, where digital alternatives simply cannot match the speed, convenience, or reliability.

“The Clarion™ line represents the next generation of POS papers. We’re investing in innovation and consumer choice while strengthening North American supply resilience,” adds Rapier.

By combining sustainability, consumer advocacy, and advanced innovation, Domtar remains the trusted leader in thermal POS paper production.
